- What is hot mix Asphalt?
Hot mix asphalt is a combination of approximately 95% stone, sand, or gravel bound together by asphalt cement, a product of crude oil.
- What are the benefits of asphalt pavement?
Asphalt pavement is economical as well as extremely durable and 100% recyclable. Asphalt retains heat more efficiently so that snow and ice does not form as quickly and melts faster. Asphalt surfaces are usually easier and cheaper to maintain. With a fresh coating of sealer every other year, you can get that “like new” look again and again.
- How does asphalt compare to concreting?
The advantage of using bitumen instead of cement to make concrete is that resultant asphalt concrete remains flexible, allowing it to move with the underlying pavement and or traffic it is exposed to. This reduces cracks from earth movement over time. It is easier to repair and the repair will blend seamlessly with the pre-existing surface. The surface can also be regularly maintained for a nice clean finish over the years, effectively hiding stains and general wear and tear.
- What’s the finish like?
The final finish of an asphalt surface is a smooth matte finish, however there can be differences in the appearance between areas upon close inspection. Asphalt contains various different aggregate sizes, sand, bitumen and other ingredients which can cause a varied texture on the surface. It can remain relatively soft for up to 12 months. Even once cured, it will not be as hard as concrete.
- Can it carry heavy loads?
Asphalt is highly durable and soften and harden as temperatures rise and fall. Although it is not required, you can use cool water from the hose to cause the driveway to harden for particular loads.
